Event 3 Hammer Museum

Image
On Tuesday May 4th I attended the Hammer Museum in Westwood. The Hammer Museum is a spread out are with multiple exhibits for people to walk into and explore all the amazing artwork that the Hammer Museum displays. One of the first exhibits that I walked into was the Oliver Payne and Keiichi Tanaami exhibit. This exhibit displayed very interesting artwork that brought the visuals from popular video games and normal artwork. These paintings were very cool to see because they were not just your usual hand drawn pieces of art. Instead they displayed artwork from well-known video games like Spaceship Gunner. It showed the spaceship and also explosions and missiles that went along with artwork that was already displayed. There were numerous artworks that were similar, but they were all different from each other in a special way. Many of the artworks were depicting female figures, however some were of skeletons or animals and they all had some sort of video game visual to go along with thei...

Week 9 Space and Art

Image
Space and art, perhaps, is a combination of just about all the of the previous topics that we have covered in this class. It brings together technology, math, and other sciences that we have covered over the past ten weeks. Space has an infinite amount of range which makes it similar to nanoscience in the sense that we are on a very small scale compared to the rest of the universe. When talking about technology, we have made numerous technological advances that have allowed us as humans to get to some parts of space that we were not able to get to before. One of the interesting videos I saw this week was the power of 10 video. This video showed the viewers just how big the universe really is. Every 10 seconds we are 10 times farther than where we originally started in the video. This video is really interesting because it gives the audience a perspective on how big our universe is and how small we are as humans in relation to the universe. There is so much space in space that ou...

Week 8 Nanotech

Image
Week 8- Nanotech This week, we learned all about the idea of nanotechnology. Even though the idea of nanotechnology is about studying very small things, it has become a very big topic in today's society. Nanotechnology deals with the manipulation of the atoms and molecules inside of everything that we know to exist. When studying nanotechnology, we are really trying to figure out how the smallest materials in our life are changing our life. This art-form is really important in our lives because it makes us realize that the smallest things in our lives make the biggest difference. Specifically in this week's resources, I really took interest in the NOVA video, "Making Stuff: Smaller". In the video, it was explained that bee venom could be used as a treatment for cancer. It was really interesting to see this especially when the video also explained that the bee venom would be used on individual cancer cells. First of all, it was very intriguing to hear that b...

Week 7 Neurosci and Art

Image
Neuroscience is the study of the nervous system and the brain. These two parts of the body are some of the most important parts because they help us live our everyday lives. These two body parts are the most complex out of all of them and that is what makes them art. Art is so complex and intricate that if one thing were different then you would be a completely different person. Both of these parts are so important as they essentially are the reason we have the ability to see, feel and use our other senses efficiently.  One of the most interesting things that I found out was Christopher deCharm's Tedtalk on the brain and the new way to look at your brain through MRI. He explains in the talk that we have the capability to literally see how we feel.  He asked the audience to raise their right arm above their head and then he showed a person's brain doing the same action. It was very interesting to see that a spot lightened up on the screen and we found out that that was...

Week 6

Image
This week, we learned about BioTech and art. This is one of the more interesting topics in this course because it is so complex in just about every phase. Perhaps the most important part of this section is the genome. A genome is a haploid set of chromosomes in a microorganism. The reason that the genome is so important is because it makes us who we are individually. Your genome is basically your DNA in your body. Having said that, without different genomes we would all be the same person and life would be completely different. The complexity of the double helix DNA cell is the reason that we are unique and the reason that we are different than everyone else.  Barry Schuler explains in his TedTalk that we now have the capability to look at DNA and understand it in terms of letters. With this, we can now see the different coding in each person's DNA and see the differences in each person's DNA. Looking at the double helix, which is the shape of DNA, we can see that it is a ...

Event 2

On May 10th, I attended Eli Joteva's presentation at the Broad Center on campus. When I walked in, the first thing I noticed was a sound that I could not comprehend and I was confused. The first thing that caught my eye was a big protector that was projecting  sphere with various leaves and flowers on them. Then, we walked upstairs and saw these perfect spheres hanging from rope attached to the ceiling. At this time, Ms. Joveta introduced herself to us and started describing what these spheres were. She said that these spheres were made of ice and that she had attached flowers and mushrooms on them. Then, we asked her the question that was on all of our minds, what is the noise coming out of the speaker? She proceeded to show us one of the three spheres that was dripping and these drips were hitting a pan below it. The drips hit the pan at the same time the noise was going off and then when Ms. Joveta put her hand underneath the sphere and suddenly the noise stopped. We were all a...
