Event 2

On May 10th, I attended Eli Joteva's presentation at the Broad Center on campus. When I walked in, the first thing I noticed was a sound that I could not comprehend and I was confused. The first thing that caught my eye was a big protector that was projecting  sphere with various leaves and flowers on them. Then, we walked upstairs and saw these perfect spheres hanging from rope attached to the ceiling. At this time, Ms. Joveta introduced herself to us and started describing what these spheres were. She said that these spheres were made of ice and that she had attached flowers and mushrooms on them. Then, we asked her the question that was on all of our minds, what is the noise coming out of the speaker? She proceeded to show us one of the three spheres that was dripping and these drips were hitting a pan below it. The drips hit the pan at the same time the noise was going off and then when Ms. Joveta put her hand underneath the sphere and suddenly the noise stopped. We were all amazed since we had never seen anything like that before.

After we finished exploring, we started asking her questions about her work and one of the most important questions was what do these ice spheres represent? Ms. Joveta explained to us that the spheres represent the glaciers melting in the arctic and antarctic areas. She asked the question, where is our place in nature? She questioned our role in the global warming process. She wondered if we as humans should just let nature run its course and see what happens. Ms. Joveta argued that we should just let nature run its course, however I disagree. I believe that we need to intervene in order to stop global warming from happening.

Over the past decades, we as a human race have let off many harmful gasses that make their way to the top and bottom of the earth  which make those parts heat up. This causes glacier caps to melt and the earth to get warmer. We have created this global warming due to these gasses, so we have to figure out a way to fix this problem. Over the past couple of years, leaders of the world's top countries have gathered and tried to make reforms and solutions to one of the world's biggest problems. We have since cut down our emissions and done well to help our earth.

Even though we have cut down on this problem, it is far from over. It will take a long time to fully fix this problem and it may not even be possible due to our immense emission of these harmful greenhouse gasses. However, all we can do as a human race is control what we personally emit and start there. I think that Eli Joveta's presentation really opened my eyes even more to this phenomenon and it was really interesting to hear her idea of global warming.
