Event 3 Hammer Museum

On Tuesday May 4th I attended the Hammer Museum in Westwood. The Hammer Museum is a spread out are with multiple exhibits for people to walk into and explore all the amazing artwork that the Hammer Museum displays. One of the first exhibits that I walked into was the Oliver Payne and Keiichi Tanaami exhibit. This exhibit displayed very interesting artwork that brought the visuals from popular video games and normal artwork. These paintings were very cool to see because they were not just your usual hand drawn pieces of art. Instead they displayed artwork from well-known video games like Spaceship Gunner. It showed the spaceship and also explosions and missiles that went along with artwork that was already displayed. There were numerous artworks that were similar, but they were all different from each other in a special way. Many of the artworks were depicting female figures, however some were of skeletons or animals and they all had some sort of video game visual to go along with their paintings.

The other painting that I viewed in a different exhibit was a painting by Charles Gaines. This painting first caught my eye due to the fact that there were three pictures that looked similar to each other but had different features about them. As I got closer I noticed that the main idea of the paintings were all of a man named Terry Allen, but as you looked the the right of the main picture, the idea became less and less descriptive. Instead, the entire paintings to the right were made up of tiny boxes and made a big picture. Also, as I looked into the boxes more I noticed that the middle line of boxes started at zero and as I looked away from that line I noticed that the numbers became bigger and bigger. This was very interesting because all of these numbers formed together to create a headshot of a man.

The Hammer Museum was a very cool place to explore because just about everything you looked at was art in some way. One of the most fun things about the Hammer Museum were the chairs that were in the middle of the museum. These chairs were very fun to play with because you could roll around in a circle and not tip over. However, these chair were not only fun, but they were a piece of art because they used math and angles to allow you to freely roll around and not fall. The Hammer Museum was a very insightful place that allowed me to see artwork that I have never seen before. It also gave me new ideas as to the different kinds of art that can be made and all of the different resources that you can use to make art. All of the creative minds that are shown in this museum make this museum very modern and entertaining for anyone to see.
